Go

Last week at church, I led the song, “That’s My King” by Cece Winans. The song declares the glory of God, describing His wonderful and praise-worthy attributes, showing Him off as the singer’s King. A verse in the song catches my attention every time,

“I’m not letting the rocks cry without joining the chorus
There aren’t enough notes to make the harmony…”

As a praise and worship leader, I know that harmony is important in singing to elevate music from flat and two-dimensional to a fuller, more enjoyable experience. Vocal harmonies signify that the voices are singing in agreement and accord. Multiple notes blending to create a textured and beautiful sound that is pleasing to the ear, heart and soul and most importantly, pleasing to God.

The idea of rocks singing God’s praises is not a new one. Jesus in his triumphal entry as King in Luke 19:40 told the Pharisees that should his disciples stop praising God (like the Pharisees wanted), the stones would give praise instead. Stones!

Creation shows forth God’s handiwork each new day. Trees “sing”, fire, wind, mountains, in fact, “all the earth” praise the Lord (Psalm 96:12  and 148:1-13). A chorus declaring his eternal power, wisdom and glory. Creation is worshipping God endlessly. How much more should man?

Fragile mortal beings are we, yet the Almighty cares for us and His mind is full of us. Psalms 8:4-6 (NKJV) echoes some of my amazement,

“What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than the angels, And You have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet…”

When we consider God’s greatness and majesty, His love, it should move us to wonder and to join all of creation and the host of heavens. Our praise is needed to complete the harmony.
